The Forgotten Wallet
Jake had always been the kind of person who double-checked everything. Before leaving home, he would pat his pockets, making sure he had his phone, keys, and wallet. But that morning, in a rush to catch the bus, he forgot.
It wasn’t until he stepped into his favorite coffee shop and reached for his wallet that he realized it was missing. His heart sank. The barista, a kind-looking woman named Emma, noticed his hesitation.
"Forgot your wallet?" she asked with a smile.
Jake sighed. "Yeah, and I really need this coffee today."
Emma chuckled. "It happens to the best of us. This one's on the house."
Jake hesitated but accepted her kindness. "I’ll pay you back tomorrow."
The next day, he returned, wallet in hand, ready to repay his debt. But when he stepped up to the counter, Emma wasn’t there. Instead, a different barista greeted him.
"Emma?" Jake asked.
The barista looked confused. "There’s no Emma working here."
Jake frowned. "But she gave me a free coffee yesterday."
The barista shook his head. "I've been here all week. No one named Emma works here."
Jake stood there, puzzled. Had he imagined it? He reached into his pocket and pulled out a receipt from the day before. At the bottom, a small handwritten note read:
"Kindness is never forgotten."
Jake smiled, slipping the receipt back into his wallet. Some mysteries weren’t meant to be solved.
